Teaching Kids the Importance of Oral Health
Creating Healthy Little Smiles

Teaching children how to look after their smiles from a young age is essential.

Children need to develop a positive outlook on dental health early on so that they can continue to take pride in looking after their smile as they grow into adults. How does your child feel about brushing and flossing?

The best way to keep your little one's teeth healthy is to encourage them to brush twice every day for two minutes, especially once before bedtime. They should also be taught the importance of a daily flossing routine. If they're able to get into the groove and make a daily habit of it, soon enough, it should become second nature!

If you're not confident that your child is old enough to know how to correctly brush and floss just yet, guide them every day until you're sure they've got the hang of it. A dental hygienist will also be happy to demonstrate the proper cleaning techniques to your child. Children (and adults alike) should see their dentist and hygienist for a routine check-up and cleaning every 6 or so months.

Diet plays a role, too

In addition to good oral hygiene practices, you can help to ensure your child's dental health by limiting the amount of sugary foods or drinks you supply them with. It's also important to note that frequent snacking, (namely on sugary foods or carbohydrates such as breads, pastas and cereals) can be a threat to your little one's teeth. When it comes to snacks, try to supply your child with dental-friendly foods, such as vegetables or cheese. The more times your child's teeth are exposed to sugars or acids, the more times their teeth are under attack… which, over time, leads to cavities.
